James Seow; 萧剑魂
Fine Art Skills and Practices, FdA, 2009-2011
James Seow is a Malaysian/British artist based in London. His work employs as a starting point traditional East-West representations of nature. He questions the historical forces that have deeply shaped our value judgements and aesthetic tastes.
Through print, photography, sculpture and installations, he explores how ideals of universal equality and harmony can be communicated.
He works primarily in print exploring the relationship between materials and techniques. Many of his pieces are site-specific, using architectural and spatial qualities as his starting point. Seow states that 'It is my intention to allow the viewer to embark on the psychological experience that the space evokes, which often closely links to its historical past'.
Since graduating from CSM, he has continued his art practice. A recent project ‘Invasive Species’ visualises a mythical, naturalistic space that balances reality and illusion through an East-West viewpoint that questions the perspective of one’s imagination, whilst referencing Old Master still-life paintings and their interest in hierarchy, symbolism and aesthetics.
