Robert and James Adam
The Adam brothers, Robert (1728–1792) and James (1732–1794), were born in Kirkcaldy, Fife, the sons of Scotland’s most famous architect William Adam. They were architects, builders, designers and developers, as well as suppliers of building materials. Their architectural style is characterised by neo-Antique ornaments and typically 18th-century refinement and elegance. The Adam brothers made use of varied room shapes and intricate decorative plasterwork in their interior designs, as well as rippling facades on the exteriors of their buildings. The style was heavily influenced by Robert Adam’s experiences and studies during his Grand Tour between 1754 and 1758, and, to a lesser extent, by James’s experiences on his Grand Tour.
