Artist Info
Irene Wellington
A student at Maidstone School of Art from 1921 to 1925, she won a Royal Scholarship to the RCA, where she was a pupil of Edward Johnston from 1925 to 1930, and his assistant in the calligraphy class from 1927 to 1928. She taught, part-time, Writing and Illuminating at the Edinburgh College of Art from 1932 to 1943, and part-time at the Central School from 1944 to 1959. Very much in the Johnston tradition, she also developed calligraphy as a personal statement. Her vision of the craft has made an important contribution to the art form as it is today. The Crafts Study Centre, Holburne Museum, Bath, has a large collection of her work.
