Alix Stone
A pupil of Jeannetta Cochrane, Stone graduated from the Theatre Design course in 1935. She then taught costume design on the course until the 1960s. Stone worked extensively for theatre, ballet, films and television as a designer of costumes, masks and other props, often working with other Central School designers such as Tanya Moiseiwitsch. During her career she worked for many famous productions including the Gielgud season at the Lyric Hammersmith in the 1950s. Her work for the RSC spanned the 1960s to the 1980s and included costume design for Vanessa Redgrave in The Taming of the Shrew and Judi Dench in Measure for Measure. She worked at the Old Vic for many years including the 1945 production of Henry IV parts I and II. Her padding for Ralph Richardson's Falstaff earned her a mention in his autobiography. In the 1960s Stone was one of the designers whose work was chosen to illustrate the Folio Society's series of Shakespeare plays. She has donated work to the Museum Collection.
