He studied Fine Art at the Slade under Tonks and took evening classes with W.P. Robins at the Central. He then studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris and travelled widely in Europe. In the second world war he was an official war artist working in Egypt, India and Burma, as well as Europe. He taught book illustration, etching and engraving at the Central School from 1948 to 1954. He worked extensively as a book illustrator and also did work for the Strand Magazine and Radio Times, but preferred to be known as a painter and etcher. A retrospective exhibition of his etchings was held at the V&A in 1968. He was elected RA in 1980.
