Anthony Froshaug
From 1941 worked as a freelance designer and typographer in Cornwall using minimal letter press equipment and type. His work grew out of an understanding of Jan Tschichold and modernism. He produced early British examples of progressive European typography with his own printing press in Cornwall and developed an interest in the structural meaning of a text. He was also one of the early users of unjustified setting. His designs were characterised by a simplicity verging on the austere and an almost exclusive use of Gill Sans. He was a student at the Central school from 1937 to 1939.
Principally influential as a teacher, at the Central School 1948-53 and 1970-84; at the Ulm Hochschule fur Gestaltung, Ulm, Germany, 1957-61; at the R.C.A. 1961-64, where his students included Richard Doust, later head of St Martin’s first year from 1980 and first leader of 'joint course' from Geoff Fowle, currently leader of the third year); and at Watford College of Technology and Coventry College of Art and Design. His greatest contribution was probably as an influential and charismatic teacher. He designed Central School prospectuses from 1970 to 1984.
