DescriptionPoster designed for the second part of the CSM Museum & Study Collection exhibition 'I Don't Know Her Name But I Know Her Work' 2017/18 which celebrated 100 years of women’s suffrage. Created in response to Rachel Marshall's illustration for The Common Cause. Text by the designer:“Responding to The Common Cause cover, my work plays on the derisive tone used to ridicule those against suffrage. As, unfortunately, such attitudes towards voting still exist today, I have created an updated version of the dialogue, which presents common excuses used to not vote. It works to highlight the importance of using our vote, by comparing these excuses to the disrespectful and outdated views of the early 1900’s.

I have sampled part of Marshall’s original illustration to assist the text, choosing to continue the early 1900’s dress style but adding colour and pattern to modernise it. This contrast of old and new reinforces my message that, thanks to the inspirational women of the Suffragette movement, times have changed, and so should our attitudes towards voting.” Ellen Powley
