DescriptionThe plot is Shinanoya Ohan (信濃屋お半) and Obiya Choemon (帯屋長右衛門)'s road journey. This kind of story is called ‘Michiyukimono (道行物)’ and is often a depiction of the sentiments of a couple who are in love with each other, interwoven with the scenery on their way to double suicide.
Ohan and Choemon start a relationship, and eventually end up in love. The story is based on an actual incident in 1761 when the two were killed on the Katsura River (桂川) on their way to Osaka.
