Shao-Yen Chen is a Taiwanese born fashion designer and a Central Saint Martins MA graduate. During his studies at CSM, he was awarded the 2009 Fashion Weekend/Le Vif Award in Brussels, Belgium for his BA graduation collection. After his first showcase as part of the CSM MA show during LFW AW2010, he continued to present his designs, which incorporate unconventional materials and structures, at London and Paris fashion weeks. He started his own label Shao Yen after graduating from the MA Fashion Knitwear course in 2010.
In February 2011, he was invited to curate a display window for Selfridges department store in London, as part of their 'Bright Young Things' project. He also gained recognition through a wide range of projects including SHOWstudio’s “Punk” film series. He has created a bespoke dress for Icelandic singer Björk. He has also had exhibitions at Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen Rotterdam (Netherlands), Lane Crawford Beijing (China), the Calais Lace Museum (France), and National Palace Museum in Taiwan.
In recent years he has moved back to Taiwan where he continues to work on collaborative projects with local artists and performers, notably the Cloud Gate Dance Theatre and celebrated calligrapher Yang-Tze Tong for the “From Ink to Fashion” exhibitions.
