Lindsay P. Butterfield

Lindsay Butterfield attended night classes at the Lambeth School of Art in 1887-8 and briefly studied architecture under his cousin Philip Johnstone. He then went on to spend three years at the National Art Training School in South Kensington. By 1894 he was established as a freelance designer. He taught at a number of art colleges and joined the design staff at the Central School in 1916, teaching in the School of Textiles from 1919 until 1934. By then he was widely known for his designs for the leading textile manufacturers of the day and in 1922 published 'Floral forms in historic design'. In 1930 he was a founder member of the Society of Industrial Designers (now the Chartered Society of Designers).
