Simon Brett
Wood engraver, author, teacher. He was educated at Ampleforth College before attending St Martins (1960-64). He studied under Frederic Gore and Peter da Francia in the Painting School and was taught wood-engraving by Clifford Webb, who influenced him greatly. He won a travel grant to study in New Mexico (1965-67) and travelled as a painter in Denmark and Provence. He taught at Marlborough College (1971 - 89). He won the Francis William Illustration award for The animals of Saint Gregory (1981) which was published under his own Paulinus Press imprint. Since the 1980s he has worked primarily as a wood engraver for private presses, and has illustrated fourteen books for the Folio Society. He is a Chairman of the Society of Wood Engravers and has published a handbook for engravers: Engravers: a handbook for the nineties (1987).
