Pearl Binder

Pearl Binder (or Polly Binder). The daughter of a Jewish tailor, she studied at Manchester School of Art before coming to London in 1925 to study lithography under James Fitton at the Central School. She became active in left-wing politics and a member of the Artists International Association. Her work was published in the "New Masses". She lived in the east end slums for several years and used her experiences to illustrate several books including Thomas Burke's "The Real East End" (Constable, 1932). She was a freelance lecturer, book illustrator, stained glass designer and ceramic designer for Wedgwood.
