Dora M. Billington
Dora Billington. Born into a family of potters in Staffordshire, she attended the Hanley School of Art and worked as a decorator for Bernard Moore from 1912 to 1915. She studied and subsequently taught pottery at the RCA from 1916 to 1925. She taught at the Central School from 1924 to 1955 and became Head of Department, which she transformed with her own technical experience and open-minded attitudes. Among her students were Alan Caiger-Smith and Katherine Pleydell-Bouverie. Her own work consisted of studio stoneware typical of the period and designs for industry, notably J.& G. Meakin. She also wrote on pottery, her book 'The Art of the Potter' (Oxford University Press, 1937) being the first to feature contemporary studio pottery.
