Margaret Woodward attended Barnsley School of Art and after that the Central School of Arts and Crafts (during the second world war) to study costume design under Jeannetta Cochrane. She taught drawing at the Woolwich School of Art and from c.1950 started teaching two days a week at the Central School. She stayed there for the rest of her life. She took over the writing and illustrating of Norah Waugh's The Cut of Women's Clothes (1968) after Norah Waugh died suddenly in 1966.
