Hans Tisdall
Born Hans John Knox Aufseeser in Munich, he studied at the Academy of Fine Art, Munich, and was apprenticed to a sculptor in Paris. He married Isabel Gallegos of Tamesa Fabrics for whom he made many designs, as well as for Edinburgh Weavers. He also designed murals, tapestries and mosaics. He is known for his distinctive book illustrations and book jackets. He taught at the Central School from 1947 to 1962, initially in the Textile Design department but mainly in the School of Painting. He won the competition to design the entrance to the Fun Fair, Battersea Pleasure Gardens, at the Festival of Britain, 1951. The following 10 items in the collection F531-F540 are thought to be designs for murals commissioned by Grey Wornum as decorations for SS Queen Elizabeth . They were never used as the ship was converted to a troop carrier at the outbreak of World War 2. Tisdall changed his name from Aufseeser at that time.
