Herbert Kerr Rooke
Herbert Rooke was the nephew of Thomas Matthews Rooke (artist and assistant to Edward Burne-Jones) and cousin of Noel Rooke. He studied art at South Kensington, and at the Slade School under Brown. In 1919 his wood-engraved work was recognized by champions of modern wood engraving, Joseph Thorp and Malcolm Salaman, and reproduced in two seminal publications, "Change: The Beginning of a Chapter" and "Modern Woodcuts and Lithographs by British and French Artists" respectively.
Rooke mainly painted marine subjects and was also a poster designer. From 1894 to 1927 he exhibited at the Royal Society of British Artists (member 1898-1912), and from 1898 at the Royal Academy. His work was also exhibited at the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, Manchester City Art Gallery, the Goupil Gallery, and with the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours.
