Anthony Powell was a student of Jeannetta Cochrane at the Central School of Arts and Crafts 1953-1955. He worked, first as an assistant to other designers, including Cecil Beaton, and later as a designer in his own right while teaching in the Central School of Art and Design Theatre Department between 1958 and 1971.
He received a Tony Award for his costume designs for John Gielgud's production of 'School for Scandal' in 1963 and a second nomination for his set design. He won his first Oscar in 1973 for 'Travels with my Aunt' and went on to win again for 'Death on the Nile' in 1979 and for 'Tess' in 1981. After 'Tess', he continued collaborating with Polanski on 'Pirates' (1986), for which he was nominated for an Oscar, 'Frantic' (1988) and the French stage production of 'Amadeus'.
He was nominated again in 1999 for his costume designs for '102 Dalmations'. He won the Drama-Logue Critics Award and the LA Critics Circle Award in 1993 for the stage production of 'Sunset Boulevard'. In 2000 he received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Costume Designers Guild of Hollywood.
