Starting at the age of 16 at Michaelis School of Fine Art, he moved to London to study under Gertrude Hermes, Victor Pasmore, Keith Vaughan and Mervyn Peake at the Central School. On leaving he worked as a portraitist, graphic designer and cartoonist for among others Punch magazine.
He moved briefly to the Netherlands before returning to South Africa in the early 1950s, where he became head of Port Elizabeth Technikon School of Art and Design in 1964.
He continued to work as an artist in his own right and died in Cape Town in 2009.
