J.H. Mason

A compositor and self taught classical scholar, Mason joined the Doves Press in 1900. He taught printing and typography at the Central School from 1905, becoming Head of the School of Book Production until his retirement in 1940. Under his guidance, the quality of work during this period was outstanding and his contribution to typography and layout influenced book prooduction throughout the U.K. and Europe. He was a founder of the journal The Imprint and designed the Imprint Old Face typeface. In 1936 he was one of the first RDI's (Royal Designers for Industry) to be appointed.
