She studied at Brighton School of Art, The Slade and the Central School where she learned wood engraving from Noel Rooke in the 1920s. A woodengraver, stained glass designer and writer, she was elected to the Society of Wood Engravers (SWE) in 1928. She designed posters for London Transport and the Empire Marketing Board. Her best known books are 'A Farmers Year' (Collins, 1933) and a manual on ' Woodengraving and Woodcuts' (The Studio, 1932). She moved to the USA in 1939 where she settled permanently, and continued to work until her death in 1989.
