William Johnstone

Son of a Scottish farmer, he studied at Edinburgh College of Art under Morley Fletcher, in Paris in the 1920s with Andre L'Hote and Ozenfant, and travelled extensively in the USA. He taught art in various schools and colleges at all levels before becoming principal of Camberwell School of Art in 1938. He was principal of the Central School from 1947 to 1960, where he gathered together a group of outstanding teachers including some of the most vital young artists of the day. He published a number of books on children's art. There was a major exhibition of his paintings in the Hayward Gallery in 1981.
