Edward Johnston

Johnston was invited by Lethaby to start a class on Writing and Illumination in 1899, he was responsible for the revival of calligraphy in this country. He taught at the Central School and was immensely influential, his students included Eric Gill, Noel Rooke and Graily Hewitt, who took over his class when Johnston moved to the RCA in 1912. He designed type for Count Kessler's Cranach Press and in 1916 was commissioned by Frank Pick to design type for the London Underground. His typeface Railway is still in use today. He also designed for them the circle and bar symbol, an early corporate identity. Johnston's influence was particularly strong in Germany. His book "Writing and Illumination & Lettering" (James Hogg, 1906) was a seminal work.
