Studied at Manchester College of Art 1933-37 and at St.Martins School of Art (1938-39). He taught illustration at the Central School (1951-56) as well as at the Cambridge School of Art and the RCA. He became a freelance painter and illustrator in 1950. His reputation is primarily as a graphic reporter writing and illustrating places and peoples he has visited and met. He was elected RA in 1984 and RDI in 1979.
