Graily Hewitt was one of Edward Johnston's original students of calligraphy and took over the class when Johnston moved to the Royal College in 1912. He became a very well known calligrapher undertaking many rolls of honour, as well as gilding and tooling leather bound missals and other volumes for church use. His connection with the Central lasted for over 30 years.
