Born in India he studied at the Slade School of Fine Art and the Academie Julien in Paris where he knew Gauguin and Van Gogh. He was a founder member in 1909 of the Senefelder Club. In 1918 in his capacity as a war artist he produced two portfolios of lithographs for the London Underground, 'War work' and 'Womens work'. He taught drawing and painting at Camberwell from 1908 and lithography at Central from 1914 to 1929. He wrote 'Lithography as a Fine Art' (1932)
