Ruth Harris

School: Central School of Arts & Crafts

A student at the Central School from 1953-56, she taught weaving at the college from 1961-1978. Ruth Harris established her first tapestry studio/workshop in Essex in 1960 and her work has been exhibited in many group exhibitions The Crafts Council mounted a one-man show of her work in 1983. She has travelled extensively, including the Middle East to study carpet weaving. In 1983 she had a Crafts Council bursary to undertake research into Soumak weaving when she travelled to Mexico, Guatemala and Peru. She produced free-lance
woven design for Heals, Greys & Co, Edinburgh Weavers, Donald Brothers and Sir Hugh Casson and partners from the 1960s to 1970s. She has also undertaken a number of commissions for tapestries for 'Art for Offices'. She has work in the V&A permanent collection and in private collections in the UK, USA and Germany
