Eric Gill
Birth Date: 1882
Death Date: 1944
School: Central School of Arts & Crafts
One of the most influential designers of his age, perhaps best known for his relief carvings: e.g. BBC Portland Place Building, HQ London Transport and Westminster Cathedrall 'Stations of the Cross' (1913-18) as well as the Gill Sans typeface. He was initially a student of E.Johnston (Calligraphy) at the Central School and later taught lettering for stonemasons there from 1906 to 1910. He was paticularly close to Noel Rooke and they both began woodengraving around 1904. Gill decorated a great many books including 'The Four Gospels' (Golden Cockerell Press, 1931).
