James K. Young

The James K. Young was born in the New Zealand town of Hawera in 1924. He studied first at the Auckland art school (Elam), then the California School of Fine Arts, the Grande Chaumiere in Paris, the Central School, and the British School in Rome.
He was awarded the Prix de Rome for engraving in 1950 and taught etching at the Central School in 1952-53. In 1955 he had an exhibition in New Zealand (at the Hawkes Bay art gallery in Napier). A newspaper article published to mark the opening said that he was working at the time as a book illustrator in London (‘Art exhibition opens in Napier today’, The Daily Telegraph, 11 May 1955).
