Birth Place:Seaton, Devon
School: Central School of Arts & Crafts

Marcia Lane Foster studied at St John's Wood Art School and the Central School, where she was awared a silver medal for figure painting (1920-1). She was one of Noel Rooke's wood engraving pupils. As a result of his encouragement she was one of the first of her generation of wood engravers to be published commercially, with her designs for Kenneth Grahame's The Headswoman (Bodley Head, 1921). Herbert Furst and Malcolm Salaman, two contemporary champions of wood engraving, admired her work and included examples in their important books on the subject. Most of Foster's many illustrations were line-drawn, especially those of the 1950s and 1960s which were largely for children's books. Her drawings of children were often used in advertising.

Her work was exhibited with NEAC, RA, RA, SWA, SWE and Paris Salon.
