James Fitton

Apprenticed to a calico print designer in Manchester in 1914, he attended evening classes until 1921 at Manchester School of Art, where he met L.S. Lowry. He moved to London in 1921 and worked as a studio assistant to Johnson Riddell, printers, while taking evening classes in lithography at the Central School under A.S. Hartrick. He taught lithography at Central from 1933. A founder member of the Artists' International Association, with several of his students, he drew many political cartoons for the Left Review and Time and Tide. He worked as an illustrator, poster designer, oil painter, and textile designer and was elected to the London Group in 1934 and RA in 1954 He was married to Margaret Fitton (Peggy Cook) a Central student.
