Terry Armistead
Terry started at West Sussex College of Design in 1973. After his foundation year he studied fashion and knitwear. After leaving college, he designed and produced his own knitwear and patterns, and created a small production line with Susie Miller known as Woolgatherers. Terry's specialties were intricate texture and intarsia on textile.
He was asked to produce sample pieces and patterns for John Galliano in the 80s, possibly on the recommendation of someone at Knitting Machine Monthly where he wrote a column. Terry was a perfectionist and loved the challenge of creating John's desgins, which weren't always easy to interpret.
Terry gathered a team of outworkers. Experienced machine knitters would be given a pattern(written by Terry) and yarn and asked to produce the pieces. He oversaw the finishing and sewing up as this was oftern complicated.
Terry had a great sense of humour, he always loved fashion and textiles in particular.
Eventually, in the 90s, he found the pressure too much and left Galliano's to continue his own pattern design and textile art, exhbiting in local galleries.
