Vidya Premraj
Vidya is an emerging documentary filmmaker and photographer based in London.
Through holistic and ethical practice, Vidya encapsulates people, culture, and
conservation through an experimental digital lens, telling stories and encouraging
community engagement.
Stories are a beautiful thing to share.
Determined to bring the community closer through narrative, Vidya’s practice delves into
the creation of storytelling, forming warm connections with people, places, culture and
conservation. She has explored the power of the voice and narrative as tools for intimacy
and highlighted storytelling's transformative capacity for fostering connections and its
power to drive social change. Her practice has centred around situating herself within her
sites of research and forming genuine relationships with the things around her.
Documenting through a digital lens, Vidya’s focus started within her local surroundings
and spread across the globe to India, her motherland. A recurring location in her practice,
Vidya is constantly drawn to her roots, exploring Indian culture, identity, and
conversation.
Vidya’s work heavily considers exhibition design, encouraging audience members to
engage, play with, and contemplate her work. This was prompted by her desire to make
moving images and photography more immersive and interactive, especially within a
gallery space. Vidya wants these stories to come to life and for you to connect with them.
