Gerard Hanson

Gerard Hanson is an artist and lecturer. He studied BA Printmaking in London at Central Saint Martins in 1993 and then gained and MA in Fine Art Printmaking at Wimbledon School of Art. He has exhibited internationally and has work in public and private collections.
More recent work includes ‘Style and Pose’, a collection of portraits exploring Caribbean hair, linked to a colonial legacy. The work portrays its subject through hair-straightening, weaves and wigs from the Jamaican ‘Street Salon’. These are overlaid with paint to offer layers of decoration in the tradition of body-painting. The result is both a celebration and a critique of personal image.
