The accessory was designed by Sonia Delaunay and worn by a dancer in The Ballets Russes production of Cléopâtre, which opened in 1909. Delaunay’s design is thought to date from c.1918, and is possibly based on an earlier design by Leon Bakst which was later damaged by fire.
The collar features a zig-zag design constructed of metal threads and has a popper fastening. To the reverse is a handstitched label bearing the name of the production and possibly the name of a dancer or character "Essalair [sp]".
