DescriptionDrawings of a young woman's jacket (or caraco) and matching petticoat made of painted and dyed cotton fabric (chintz) produced in south-east India's Coromandel Coast for export to Europe in about 1770. It would have been made up in c.1780. It is at the V&A (T.229-1927):
.1-2 drawings showing the construction of the caraco (V&A: it is ingeniously constructed. One T-shaped piece of cloth forms the back and the sleeves, which fold over the arm, forming a raglan sleeve in the front. The back is shaped using tucks rather than the more usual pleats or seams.)
.3 detail of the hook fastening on the waistband
.4 watercolour drawing of the caraco and petticoat.
