DescriptionBlackstone and porcelain bowl, from The Perfect Imbalance set by Amanda Tong. Blackstone and porcelain bowls on an ashwood tray.

Amanda’s classic marble collection The Perfect Imbalance is inspired by the Yin-Yang Food Therapy - one of the most fundamental concepts in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). The Perfect Imbalance, serves as a constant reminder for us to maintain a healthy and balanced lifestyle through gaining a better understanding of our body conditions.

It's an interactive tableware series that reflects the philosophical concept of Yin-Yang through the play of balance. In our everyday life, an imbalance of these energies will increase susceptibility to sickness. We therefore need to consume food of an opposing energy to restore balance. This approach is known as Yin-Yang Food Therapy from TCM. Each ceramic piece is a manifestation of this principle and is hand-thrown by mixing black and white porcelain, resulting in unique creations that serve as a material metaphor for our bodies - we all have a unique blend of Yin-Yang energy that needs to be constantly rebalanced.

The small ceramic pieces are designed to be imbalanced to encourage interactions, and when placing them onto the wooden seesaw platter, the bowls will tilt up and down according to the weight of each bowl as well as the weight of the food that is being served on them. This interactive design prompts users to take control and adjust its balance.
