DescriptionWood engraved block comprising both type and image: the image portrays a semi-nude female figure, holding a staff and blowing a horn. This is the original engraved woodblock for the front cover illustration of 'Contemporary English Woodcuts' (Duckworth & Co., London; 1922). Written by Campbell Dodgson (Keeper of Prints and Drawings at the British Museum, 1912-1932), 'Contemporary English Woodcuts' was an important book in that it recognised the vitality of a burgeoning movement, acknowledging the gathering pace of the wood engraving revival and giving credence to its credentials as a medium for contemporary book illustration.
