Jiraiya (自来也 or 児雷也) is a fictional bandit or ninja who appears in late-Edo period Yomihon books (読本, a tale of fantastic in the Edo period). The name Jiraiya is said to be based on a real-life thief in Song Dynasty China who wrote ‘我来也 (I came here)' on the wall of a house he had stolen from. The story of Jiraiya was adapted into Kabuki and Joruri theatre.
