DescriptionCompanion piece is number 18 (P.114). This is number, or page, 17 in the 137 prints from the Triumph. This print depicts a standard bearing boy, riding one of two Elks (a wonderful example of naturalistic printmaking). The number 17 (this print's number in the sequence) appears in the top right corner. Treitszarwein's commentary of Maximilian's requirements (see Documentation) reveals the story of this print; the verse would have inhabited the blank standard (had the series been finished); "Music II - Lutes and Viols / after them shall be depicted a low little car on small plough wheels, two Elks shall draw the little car, and a little boy shall be the driver and shall bear the verse inscription." (see P.114 for verse). A fine Imperial watermark (a double headed eagle) is visible and should date this print to the 1526 edition.
