DescriptionLouis studied BA Costume for Performance at London College of Fashion. He says, 'This work celebrates traditional Vietnamese heritage, countering the Western tendency to view Vietnam solely through the lens of the Liberation War (also known as the Vietnam War).
Inspired by Henri Oger’s 1908 book “Kỹ Thuật Của Người An Nam”, it focuses on the craftsmanship and its everyday people like farmers, traders, artisans rather than royal grandeur.
The costumes reinterpret the silhouettes of the Tonkinoises and Annamites while also embodying the literal book, enriched with free-motion embroidery illustrations across five panels that mimic its pages. This creates an engaging interaction with the audience, who can flip through the panels themselves, offering a gateway into Vietnam’s cultural and social fabric in the period before the war'.
