Description from the designer:
This project was a great way of challenging myself to improve on my patterncutting abilities, as well as exploring more successful ways of creating structural silhouettes while reconciling my own design aesthetic with a client’s personal taste and criteria.

Grayson emphasised wearability, which is why I created a two-piece suit which he could swap out with various accessories or style with other things. The suit was made from digitally printed deadstock satin featuring handpainted watercolour prints, trimmed with laser-cut frosting-inspired lace and ruffle detailing, and fully lined with upcycled satin.

The print itself is inspired by playful motifs of candy and dissolving cake imagery, which was a big micro internet trend during the 2020 COVID lockdown. I wanted to explore this idea of sickly-sweetness in candy and fruit, when you stuff yourself until it no longer becomes enjoyable and is rather unpleasant, hence the bright colours, bold greens, and clashing pinks.

I also experimented with bonded felted satin, which I laser-cut to look like the silhouette of cake icing and to push it in a more futuristic direction as opposed to more traditional embroidery.
