DescriptionJuyi studied MA Graphic Media Design at London College of Communication. She says: 'China’s gated communities (Xiaoqu) represent a unique, large-scale model of community management found only here. Most Chinese residents are accustomed to but contrast sharply with perceptions of gated communities elsewhere. Over time, ‘Xiaoqu’ has evolved beyond simple residential spaces; they are now powerful symbols of identity and social status. Their design and character add value that resonates with residents’ sense of belonging and self-identification. Through this book, I aim to critically explore the origins and evolution of China’s gated communities, examining why these enclosed spaces have become so familiar in China and how they shape and reflect residents’ lives'.
