Description.3 Publication - Notes From Grendon One
T-shirt, book tote, and three publications produced by artist, Dean Kelland, during his four-year artist residency with HMP Grendon prison, which culminated in an exhibition at Ikon Gallery, titled Imposter Syndrome.
Artist's statement: HMP Grendon is the only wholly therapeutic prison in Europe and is Cat B (High Security - Serious Offences). I have been responsible during the residency for opening the first contemporary art gallery in an operational prison in the UK and have also opened a dedicated workshop space adjacent to the gallery for the men to make their own work (often in response to the exhibition programme). My role on the residency was to support the men in making their own work and also to develop original artworks in response to my time there. With my interest in gender representation and 'flawed masculinities' (developed on my PhD at CSM) I produced the "Imposter Syndrome" exhibition at Ikon Gallery. I was able to instigate many opportunities for the men through their own gallery and offsite including an academic symposium and showcase of work at Ikon Gallery.
