DescriptionLarge printed photogrpah on a red background. Description from the artist: The stories my hair tells is a project created to celebrate the versatility of afro-textured hair. It explores the beauties of coils, colours and intricate patterns that make up different protective hairstyles. In this project, I use my hairdressing, styling, photography and interviewee skills to communicate. This Project was created to encourage other young girls to talk about the stories they have about their hair, motivate them to learn about their hair but most of all to love their hair. I sourced inspiration from Kenyan Photographer Thandiwe Muriu and Photographer Campbell Addy. Both represent the celebration and beauty of black and un-represented faces and voices and visually incorporate colour in a refreshing and contemporary way. Thandiwe Muriu being very bold with her colour choices and Campbell Addy being more subtle. As young black adults, both their work made me feel seen and influenced me to create work that makes other young girls with afro-textured hair feel seen as well.
