Description from the designer: ‘Pabbi Dannedd’ is one of a series of diegetic prototypes created for Millicent Suttons final MA Biodesign project, titled: ‘Frankenflowers’.
The project is a design research, design fiction and discursive design project that speculates a scenario where the pursuit of floral perfection turns into a Darwinian nightmare. ‘Frankenflowers’ considers the ethical implications of floriculture practices, genetic modification and the future projections of climate change.
Speculating what comes after the ‘Anthropocene’, and how flowering plants might evolve to survive in this future epoch named: the ‘Anthocene’.
All outcomes of this research so far are humanoid. Giving notion to the arduous and taxing nature of mankind’s relationship with planet earth and how we collectively are threatening and changing the life encapsulated within it.
The title of the piece selected by the panel translates to ‘tooth poppy’.
Poppies today are a symbol of war and remembrance. Their unique suitability to grow on battlefields is due the the disrupted nature of the the soil as well as an increase in the elements: phosphorus and potassium. Increased quantities of these elements are found in battlefield soil as a result of blood and decomposing bodies. Although not suitable for many flowering plants these environments are particularly palatable for poppies.
