The collection is inspired by rice, a material so mutable that could
be used as building block and as nourishment for rich and poor
alike. The concept is explored by recreating traditional Chinese
jewellery out of a humble material- rice grains. Jade Bi discs,
pearled necklaces and earrings that are often associated with
power and prestige are given a new intriguing life. The collection is
an explorative process of both self and heritage which reshapes
the very concept of precious.
Purchased piece from the collection: Long Grain Rice Gradient Pendant Necklace Jade disc pendants are the most recognised Chinese traditional
jewellery. Crafting an identical piece but with rice certainly
heightens the value of rice grains. The smooth surface with
gradient colour of the rice based disc pendant necklace highly
resembles that of a real jade piece. Therefore, it is clear that rice
itself is also precious, not only by how it is casted, but by how it
enhances a piece of jewellery by its cultural meaning. Similar to jade carving, the rice arranged on top of the core is
carefully and patiently polished until a smooth surface is achieved.
