DescriptionSingle, round, stud-backed earring made of discarded onion skins woven into a decorative pattern.
Description from the designer: An earring made of onion skins. I cut onion skins into squares, and start inlaying them around a latex balloon using pva glue pressing with wax carving tools. I inlay about 6-7 layers, and leave it to dry overnight. I work on the balloon (similar to papier-mache) but I Leave the area around the balloon knot open, so I can pull out the balloon before closing the shape - which allows the ball to be hollow and very lightweight. When the balloon is pulled out I close the shape using the same technique, and later when the shape is solid I make the pattern on the surface. In the last layer I work very clean and tidy, and try to avoid extra glue so it stays clean and neat. In this pattern I cut multiple onion skins in different shades into small squares, and then spontaneously arranged them while the inlay process according to the different onion skins colors I have. I leave the top layer to dry overnight, and then very gently polish it using a small amount of natural wax finish osmo oil with a cotton cloth twice with 8 hours in between. The last part of my process is attaching the ball into a stud that attaches to the ear. I made a simple stud using 8 mm 9k recycled gold round wire and 9k recycled gold sheet. I make the wire longer than usual so I can poke the ball with the edge of it, so it will stay inside the ball to secure it. I use a small amount of glue and press it for drying.
