DescriptionMomferratou studied MA Fine Art Digital at Central Saint Martins. Floor is a broken floor collected from the artist's late grandmother’s house in Mati (Greece) which got burned down in the 2018 Attica wildfires, some of the most devastating Greek fires in recent years. Momferratou, who never met her grandmother, pieced the cracked tiles back together exactly as she found them, retaining the catastrophe’s marks. Using plasticine, she enhanced some of the cracks and gaps, to embrace its history. The small-scale sculptures standing on top of it challenge its sense of scale, making it potentially look like a map, a desert, or skin, the plasticine acting as its rivers or veins. The broken floor becomes a monument; it tells a personal story as much as it does a national one.
