THE SYNESTHETIC LAB, 2021
Olfactory training kit

This project is the result of an urgent issue – the effect of the Covid-19 Pandemic on the sensory spectrum. A key symptom of the virus is anosmia, or the loss of smell. The Synesthetic Lab tackles this issue through a multifaceted and interdisciplinary kit. This product helps the user during their journey towards scent rehab using synaesthesia, by creating a psychological link between odours and colours, therefore enhancing the power of the scent memory.

Featuring five scents and colour palettes, the kit is paired with a phone app that allows to user to receive daily notifications, group support, and instructions on the best way to move towards this unusual sensorial approach. At the end of the olfactory recovery period, the user will be able to make their very own scented candle, combining the scents used during the training..

The platform collects data on recovery/partial recovery/non recovery in order to identify patterns amongst users based on several factors: age, gender, ethnicity, medical condition, medication and smoking. It is a meaningful step for diagnosis and allows each user to be part of the medical research. The Synesthetic Lab enables those who have lost their smell to the virus to finally enjoy the scents of everyday life.
