'‘Fantasy as resistance’ as a publication used the ‘encoding/decoding’ theory of Stuart Hall to express how producers disseminate the queer discourse on the ‘danmei adapted drama’ (adapted from boys’ love novel) through encoding and how fans decode it to interpret every ‘normal’ interaction between the two characters and see the true love between them. The attempt to show homosexuality, even in the imagination of the fans, can serve as a power to counter the established heteronormative norms under the censorship of mainstream media and a burgeoning ‘queer pop’ scene in China.'
